Falafel Pita

Falafel is a very famous dish from Middle Eastern cuisine. These are usually served as delicious kebab, made of chick peas or fava beans, or with pita bread. Stuffed in pita bread with onion rings, tomatoes, lettuce leaves and tahini they make extra ordinary sandwiches. Your kids would surely love falafel pita in their lunch boxes.


  • 1 cup ‏Dried Chick peas
  • 1 large ‏Onion
  • 3 ‏Garlic cloves large
  • 2 TBS ‏Flour
  • 1 tsp ‏Coriander crushed
  • 1 tsp ‏Cumin seeds
  • 2 TBS ‏Lemon juice
  • 1 tsp ‏Baking powder
  • 4 - 5 ‏Pita bread
  • ‏Handful fresh parsley cut
  • ‏Pepper add to taste
  • ‏Salt add to taste
  • ‏Oil for frying

Pita bread stuffing:

  • ‏Falafel
  • ‏Onion rings
  • ‏Sliced Tomatoes
  • ‏Sliced cucumber
  • ‏Lettuce leaves
  • ‏Hummus
  • ‏French fries


  1. Soak chick peas over night in water. Boil them in a salted water for 5 minutes then lower the flame, cover and let simmer for about 45 minutes or till the peas are tender and cooked. Make sure the water dries out by this time. Let them cool.
  2. In a food processor, process cooked chick peas with onion, garlic, coriander, cumin, lemon juice, baking powder, flour, salt and pepper until all mixed well and form a thick paste.
  3. Take out the mixture in a bowl, add parsley and mix well.
  4. Now make small balls out of the mixture, slightly press them to flatten.
  5. Heat oil in a pan, deep fry them until golden brown from both sides.
  6. Serve them hot with humus or tahini as an appetizer or stuff them in pita bread.
  7. For pita bread stuffing, cut the pita bread in half, open both the halves resulting in pockets. Stuff these pockets with falafel and the above mentioned stuffing of your liking.
